foodbank logo

The St. Louis Foodbank gathers and distributes nearly 13.4 million pounds of food each year to 500+ food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens and emergency feeding programs throughout 14 counties in eastern Missouri and 12 counties in southwestern Illinois.

This year at holiday time, faculty, staff and students in our department donated 160 pounds of food to the St. Louis Area Foodbank. The food we collected will provide 128 meals for the St. Louis area's needy. In addition, there were two generous cash donations for Foodbank. Thank you to all who participated!

kiva logo

In December 2007, we were gifted with money to invest in underdeveloped countries through the Kiva organization. Kiva.org is a non-profit that allows you to make a small 0% loan to low income entrepreneurs in the developing world (microfinance). Individuals can help provide affordable working capital for the poor -- money to buy a sewing machine, livestock, etc. -- and empower them to earn their way out of poverty. We are excited to be able to be a part of this organization.

We initially invested in five individuals and four groups. We have since expanded to 24 loans with ten of these loans repaid. These individuals and/or groups reside in Cambodia, Bolivia, Lebanon, Cameroon, Peru, Honduras, Samoa, Moldova, Mexico, Ukraine and Tajikistan. The types of industries these entrepreneurs are involved range from weaving, selling goods, sewing and farming to animal sales and hair grooming.

UPDATE:
5-01-09 - Two more entrepreneurs have paid off their loans. We have re-invested in two new businesses, one in Mongolia and one in Mexico. Jose who resides in Mexico will now be able to construct a roof for his home. Sarantuya lives in Mongolia. She will be able to buy more merchandise for her store so that she can support her family and continue to pay her son’s college tuition.

4-03-09 - Two of the entrepreneurs that we have invested in have paid off their loans. We have re-invested our money in two new businesses, one in Boliva and one in Moldova. The Bolivian group is made up of 16 women and 5 men. The members work in various activities including public transportation, sales of products such as clothing, perfume, bread, sugar cane, meat, as well as construction of houses. This loan will be used to buy supplies, merchandise, materials, and work tools to grow their respective businesses and help improve the quality of life for their families. Anatolie in Moldova owns arable land and the soil is perfectly suited for growing potatoes. He also raises pigs and grows grain. He sells potatoes and pork at the wholesale market in town. The purpose of the loan is to buy potato seeds and film for his greenhouse.

2-25-09 - Two of the entrepreneurs that we have invested in have paid off their loans. We have re-invested our money in two new businesses, one in the Honduras and one in the Phillipines. Jose owns a barbershop. He will use his loan to purchase a truck so that he can transport fruits and vegetables to sell outside of his barbershop. Alice will be able to purchase more fish to sell in the fish market.
