Drug Clears Chronic Urinary Infections in Mice

Drs. Jim Janetka and Scott Hultgren are featured in “The Record” for their research on chronic urinary infections. Their article “Treatment and Prevention of Urinary Tract Infection with Orally Active FimH Inhibitors” appears in the November 16th issue of Science Translational Medicine. Also featured in the November 18th issue of Voice of America and in the December 5th edition of C&EN.

Interim Head Named

John Cooper

John A. Cooper, MD, PhD, has been named interim head of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

On the Cover

The figure of Drs. Scott Wildman and Garland Marshall is on the cover of the October issue of Chemical Biology and Drug Design. Their research article is entitled “Drug-like Leads for Steric Discrimination between Substrate and Inhibitors of Human Acetylcholinesterase”

Gary K. Ackers, Ph.D. (1939-2011)

Dr. Ackers was a professor in our department from 1989 to 2007, serving as department head from 1989 to 1996. His leadership was instrumental in bringing molecular biophysics to the mission of our department. 2011 – New Faculty Member – Dr. Weikai Li

Dr. Weikai Li joined the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the beginning of January as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Li’s lab combines membrane protein crystallography with functional studies. The lab focuses on membrane embedded enzymes that couple blood coagulation with oxidative folding of nascent proteins.
