Sara Chen in Dr. Katherine Weilbaecher’s lab received the 2011 David F. Silbert Summer Fellowship. Her project was “Hedgehog Signaling Inhibition Blocks Growth of Resistant Tumors Through Effects on Tumor Microenvironment”.

 

Vashnavi Purusothaman
Vaishnavi Purusothaman in Dr. Robyn Klein’s lab received the 2011 David F. Silbert Summer Fellowship. Her project was “Role of Chemokines in the Pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis”.

2011 – New Faculty Member – Dr. Weikai Li

Dr. Weikai Li joined the faculty of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics at the beginning of January as an Assistant Professor. Dr. Li’s lab combines membrane protein crystallography with functional studies. The lab focuses on membrane embedded enzymes that couple blood coagulation with oxidative folding of nascent proteins.

2010 – Honorary Doctorate in Medicine from Umeå University, Sweden

Dr. Peter Burgers

On October 23rd, 2010, Dr. Peter Burgers received an honorary doctorate in Medicine from Umeå University, Sweden. In his tribute, the dean of Umeå School of Medicine Bengt Jårvholm praised Dr. Burgers’ internationally recognized scientific contributions to the fields of DNA replication and DNA damage response mechanisms, his strong support for international collaborations, and his valuable mentoring of faculty members at Umeå University. As part of the festivities, Peter gave a scientific lecture at the University, and a general lecture for the Umeå community entitled “Genomes at Risk: Search and Rescue Operations”. The ceremony was followed by a University-wide reception and banquet. Peter’s wife Bonnie and his son Mark attended the celebration.
