2014 – Holiday Party


Our Holiday Party was held on December 19th in the King Center. This year we had a family party which included a duplos/legos table and a special visit from Santa. 2014 – Carl and Gerty Cori Lecture

HHMI Dr. Joan Steitz

Dr. Joan Steitz was selected as this year’s Carl and Gerty Cori Lecturer. She is the Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Chemistry and an HHMI Investigator at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Steitz’ lecture was entitled “Noncoding RNAs: with a viral twist”. The lecture with a reception that followed was held in the Eric P. Newman Education Center on November 18th. For photos

Robb Welty from Dr. Kathleen Hall’s lab gave a seminar entitled “Local and Global Folding of a 58mer RNA Revealed by Fluorescent Base Substitutions”. On October 17th and 18th, we had our retreat at Cedar Creek Conference Center in New Haven, MO. Keynote speakers were Dr. Jan Bieschke – “Protein Misfolding: Mechanisms and Intervention” and Dr. Timothy Wencewicz – “New Antibiotics from Nature’s Chemical Inventory”. The 2013 Silbert Summer Fellows Kara Ramsey and Qi Xiao were recently honored at a luncheon that included Dr. Shirley Silbert and a number of WUSM faculty. The David F. Silbert Summer Fellowship was set up to support short-term research internships.
