2014 Two WUSM Medical Students Awarded the David F. Silbert Summer Fellowship
Diane Aum worked in Dr. Albert H. Kim’s laboratory on a project entitled “The Effects of NAMPT Inhibition on Cancer Stem Cells of Glioblastoma Multiforme”.
James Zou worked in Dr. Marco Colonna’s laboratory on a project entitled “Analysis of the Role of IL-26 in Human Mucosal Immunity Using Monoclonal Antibodies Generated Against IL-26”.

The 2013 Silbert Summer Fellows Kara Ramsey and Qi Xiao were recently honored at a luncheon that included Dr. Shirley Silbert and a number of WUSM faculty. The David F. Silbert Summer Fellowship was set up to support short-term research internships.

Congratulations to Dr. Burgers. He received the WUSM 2014 Distinguished Investigator Award in a ceremony on January 29th.
The Distinguished Faculty Achievement awards recognize outstanding achievements in clinical care, community service, research and teaching. They are co-sponsored by the dean’s office, the Office of Faculty Affairs, Central Administration and the Executive Committee of the Faculty Council.
Congratulations to Justin Sparks. Justin will receive the Olin Biomedical Science Fellowship in April. These Fellowships were created by a generous gift from the Olin Foundation.
The Olin Fellowships are presented to Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. students conducting research in the biomedical sciences in any Washington University graduate program who have made significant contributions, and demonstrated the potential to become outstanding research scientists. Justin is a student in Dr. Peter Burgers’ lab.

Dr. Elliot Elson – Honorary University Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University
Congratulations to Dr. Elliot Elson. He was installed as an Honorary University Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University in December.
An “International Symposium on Molecular Detection and Food Safety” was held to mark the event. Dr. Elson’s son, Julian, a joint mechanical engineering and public health masters student, was in attendance representing the food safety company CibaPure that Julian founded. Drs. Srikanth Singamaneni and Guy Genin were in attendance, along with about 5000 terra cotta warriors and military beasts.
